Path (June 2007)                                                                                                    

 In ‘ Path’ the choreographer and performer, Kalpana, takes the audience through her own journey that started with Bharatanatyam. From there she takes off to share her contemporary work that can be described as personal, innovative and moving.


                                         
 

Downloading (May 2007)

A location choreography set for the Bijenkorf Galaria (Amsterdam) commissioned by ‘Dance for May’ festival. Downloading is about receiving Divine information and insights through the body. 


Spontaneous Earth (November 2006)

Performance with Pianist Rene Eckhardt presenting pieces by Cage, Ravel, Piazzolla, Satie and Biswane. Choreography and dance by Kalpana. Premiere in November 2006 and performed in various theatres in the Netherlands up to April 2007.

 

InDIaspora (August 2006)

 A meeting of Afro-Caribbean and Indian cultures creating a synthesis through music, poetry, movement and original sound tracks. Musical composition, guitar, percussion by Andro Biswane. Choreography, dance, vocals by Kalpana. Invited by the Indian Embassy in Lithuania For Indian Independence Day Celebration, Kaunus, Lithuania.

LLisa and the Stolen Winter (December 2005-January 2006)

 A collaborative theatre production for the youth with storyteller Wijnand Stomp (artistic producer) and  musician Andro Biswane. Produced by Kalebas, Haarlem. Performed at the Haarlems Philharmonic, the Netherlands.

 
Ram (April 2006)

 A performance about the Hindu God Ram using text, movement and Indian and Afro-Caribbean music accompanied by composer/musician Andro Biswane. Commissioned by and performed @ KIT Tropentheater, Amsterdam

 

Song of Songs: The Love of Meerabhai (September 2005)

 Reprise of the version performed in November 2002. A new choreography was made for this special occasion. Performed during the India-EU Summit, Delhi, India.

 
Ontzet (October/November 2004)

Choreography/Research project dealing with behavioural codes of women in Indian society. Ontzet is a Dutch word meaning both rage as well as liberation and the piece deals with both these aspects. Ontzet investigates the choreographer’s personal response to the codes of behaviour that Indian girls in general and dance students in specific are faced with. Coached by Anouk van Dijk, produced by DWA, Amsterdam.



Redanced Oscillation
(September-October 2004)

A novel concept of Rajele Jain in which the film images that are screened serve as an inspiration and base for choreography and movement. This is performed without music. Dance movements are executed near an ‘oscillating machine’ (analogue synthesizer, performed by Gerd Peun) which transforms movement into sound, which in turn becomes the music for the film. Performed at ‘Arte Festival: Temps d’Images’, in Santa Maria da Feira and Lisbon (CCB), Portugal


Chitrangada (May 2004)

A contemporary interpretation of Tagore’s piece using dance and story-telling with mixed styles of music. Performed at Tagore Festival, the Hague.


re-Set (September/October 2003)

The contemporary dance production house DWA produced this research project, and it was funded by the FAPK (National funding body). Kalpana worked under the able guidance of the contemporary dance choreographer Anouk van Dijk. During this project, Kalpana investigated the possibilities of Bharatanatyam by de-contextualising the form and applying approaches from contemporary dance to the Bharatanatyam grammar. For the musical score, Kalpana invited percussionist Bhavani Shankar (London) to work and perform with her

           

 

 

 


 

South (April 2002)

Research and Development Project with Bharatanatyam, contemporary dance and story-telling. Invited by Vayu Naidu Company, Canterbury, England.


Song of Songs (November 2000)

Using a poem of Chagall as inspiration and the structure of the Indian Varnam composition as base, dr. Rokus de Groot has composed this western modern musical piece. Orchestra consists of soprano voice, piano, lute, flute, cello, marimba and percussion. Choreographically, aspects of traditional Bharatanatyam are fused with Kalpana’s personal approach to movement. Performed in Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam, November 2000 and KIT, Amsterdam, November 2002.

Meerabhai (April-May 1998)

Choreography and dance with Western and North-Indian musicians. Tour through the Netherlands for India’s 50th year of Independence.
