The Jewish Wedding

A theatrical story in the heart of the Jewish neighbourhood in Leeuwarden.

The Jewish Wedding takes you to a special community, past times and stories of resilience, loss, love and hope. The performance starts at The Jewish School at the A.S. Levissonstraat. Via a short museum walk, the public becomes acquainted with residents from the 1930s and is welcomed to an intimate performance in Zalen Schaaf. As a wedding guest you will be transported to the stories about the bridal couple Barend and Mimi, and the Jewish community in Leeuwarden before and during WWII.

On April 18, 1939, Barend Boers and Mimi Dwinger got married in the city hall and synagogue of Leeuwarden. An 8-millimeter film was made of this wedding. This unique film material of the wedding and a wealth of (war) documents remained unseen in a suitcase that was only opened by their children after the death of Barend and Mimi. Journalist Auke Zeldenrust stumbled upon the story of the wedding and the suitcase by accident and published the book "The Jewish Wedding, a suitcase full of war secrets" in 2018.

Master of ceremonies and narrator is journalist Auke Zeldenrust. He is assisted by a colorful artistic team: play and dance by Rabbi Jallo and Rosanna ter Steege, singing by Lucette van den Berg, sand drawings by Elze van den Akker and design of the route and hall by Udo Thijssen. A special role is reserved for the current residents of the Jewish quarter. They guide the public through their streets and introduce the inhabitants of the time.

‘Everything in the performance is done in a touchingly beautiful, dignified, honest and loving way.’
Elisabeth Post — Leeuwarder Courant

‘An exceptionally penetrating performance.’
Wiggele Wouda — Friesch Dagblad
