Rebels’ Cross

‘The person who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd.
The person who walks alone is likely to find himself in a place no on has ever seen before.’
– Albert Einstein

This dance looks at the subject of 'otherness' in the light of the wayward dancers that are in this performance. The intersection where rebels meet is a source of interactions and change.

The quote from Albert Einstein inspires choreographer Kalpana Raghuraman: ‘it is safe to follow the crowd but this way you will never want to go beyond the group.’

In a world where we constantly seek similarities in order to meet each other and the importance to assimilate is promoted, Kalpana is actually looking at the concept of being different and the power of that.

In this respect Kalpana is a rebel herself. She has put aside the rules of Indian classical dance in order to arrive at her own contemporary performances. Because of her willingness not to follow any standards but always question everything, she has created performances abroad and in the Netherlands that in her eyes are relevant for people of today. Rebels' Cross fits in very well with these and builds forth on the opening up of forms and creating other forms of aesthetics.

Rebels' Cross has become a rich and varied, powerful dance excercite. It's a playful game of
two like-minded and an outsider who attempt to get closer to each other by flirting and teasing.’
