Tightrope Walker

Tightrope Walker is a personal solo about breaking loose from the shackles of being watched, a perfect fit for one of the best interpreters of Indian dance in Europe.

Tightrope Walker is a strong metaphor when it concerns a man who grew up within the restrictions of a culture of shame.
In the judgemental eyes of the ‘other’ the danger of loss of face is ever-present, honor is at stake – even then, when this ’look’ only really exists within you.
Tightrope Walker is a personal solo about breaking loose from the shackles of being watched, a perfect fit for one of the best interpreters of Indian dance in Europe.

‘For the beautiful dancer Sooraj Subramaniam she (Kalpana red.) created a solo about
loosing face in a culture of shame. Subramaniam masters the Bharatanatyam and Odissi,
as well as classical ballet and contemporary dance, which you can see in his mature mimicry
(eyes!) and delicate gestures with limbs, fingers and toes. Just a shirt, shorts, and a table.
That's all Subramaniam needed to elevate rhythmic stamping and twisting arms to a personal struggle.’
